New Blog Banner (Adobe Illustrator CS5)

Has anyone tried out the Adobe Creative Suite #6 yet??

Sorry for the lack of posts, I have been uber busy with work this week!  I made my first mobile app ever and it took me a while to get used to the building platform that I am using (GoMobile Solutions).  If the company decides to purchase the app I will definitely share it on here!

I have been dying to design a new banner and my free Adobe Illustrator trial expires today so it seemed like a great time to create one.  I decided to keep it simple this time… I used this picture of Yellowknife that I edited in Photoshop a while back:

And I found an awesome free font here:

awesome designer fonts created in 2011

(Downloading fonts is my latest obsession)

I combined my picture and font to make my new header:

Hopefully it won’t be too long until I have time to make another post!!

Project #17: Make a Header for Heather (Adobe Illustrator)

As I mentioned in my previous post, my project this week was to make a blog banner for Heather (Thorn in My Heart). It took me longer than I anticipated… There is a big difference between creating something for yourself and creating something for someone else. Heather gave me some ideas of what she would like to be included in her header: her blog title of course, a cross, a heart, Damask print, Scroll Work, Paisley and purple.  The first thing I did was google Damask print & Scroll Work to find out what they were haha. I then compiled some images for inspiration:

The next step was making my own Damask print which I wrote about in my last post.

I then started a new 870×220 pixel document in Adobe Illustrator and got to work! I took some ideas from a pretty banner that I found on Pinterest:

I visited the Lost Type Co-op for some awesome new fonts (Lavanderia & Airplane).  If you have not been to the Lost Type website yet, I would highly recommend checking it out! They have great fonts & you pay for them by donation; It’s a really neat concept.

This is the finished product:

I learned so much about using different brushes and applying different styles to images during this project. Also, I finally figured out that under “File” in Illustrator there is an option to “Save for Web & Devices”.  Since WordPress does not allow Illustrator files, I had been hitting “Print Screen” on my keyboard and saving them on Paint haha.

Heather: Let me know what you think! I would be more than happy to make any changes that you would like & I won’t be offended if you choose not to use it… It was great practice and lots of fun to make!

Project #16: Create My Own “Damask Print” (Adobe Illustrator CS5)

Hello! This week I am working on a blog banner for the lovely Heather Tiger. One of the things she likes is Damask Print so, I decided to try making my own so that I can include it in her banner.

I used this image as a guideline:

& this is my creation:

Damask Print is much easier to create than I thought it would be however, it requires a lot of patience. I used the Pen Tool and copied & pasted the designs to the opposite side using the “Reflection” function to save time and make it more symetrical.

After this project, I have a new appreciation for Damask Print!!

Project #15: Live Tracing & The Pen Tool (Adobe Illustrator)

With each design I complete using the Pen Tool I learn so many new things and I think I am finally beginning to feel comfortable with it.  I spent much more time on this project than I probably should have haha..

I love this drawing by Garance Dore:

& this is my version:

If only I could draw as fabulously as Garance… Mine is much more cartoon-ish.  To make my design I traced this image of myself by hand using the Pen Tool:

I adjusted certain features and then Live Traced the drawing to get the “photocopied” sort of look. I thought the pink lips were a cute addition!  To create the cursive text, I wrote “Practice Makes Perfect” on a piece of paper:

Then I used the Live Trace function to isolate my text & I changed the fill to improve the appearance.

So ready to work on something new, maybe it’s time for a new blog banner!

Project #14: Typography (Illustrator CS5)

Hello WordPress friends, it’s been a while! I had a job interview on Friday to work for a company building mobile applications and.. I got the job!! I am so stoked to get started!

For this project I decided to make a poster displaying a quote using different fonts. I sketched the text on some paper & took a picture:

(Yes, I really need to practice my printing skills haha.)

I used the “Live Trace” feature in Adobe Illustrator (thanks to Suzannah for telling me about this function!) to isolate each word and “Stroked” the paths with different brushes. I ended up replacing some text with Illustrator because I did not like the way the words “makes” and “you” turned out.

This is what I came up with:

It’s not the most amazing work I have ever done but I was on a limited time frame and I really wanted to make a blog post haha. The next one will be better I promise :)

Project #13: Using the Pen Tool (Illustrator CS5)

If you have read my blog posts before then you probably know that I despise the pen tool! After looking into Illustrator a bit, I realized that I was going to need to get familiar with this instrument… I tried using tutorials to help me understand how the Pen works however, I came to the conclusion that a more hands-on approach was necessary.

I decided to take the following image of myself:

& outline and colour myself in:

It’s definitely not perfect but I am pretty pleased with the result all things considered!  I could not even draw a circle before this project! If you have any good tutorials/tips for Illustrator or the Pen Tool please feel free to share :)

Bye Bye Photoshop, Hello Illustrator!

I had so much fun learning how to better use Photoshop over the last month!  Thanks to everyone who has been following my blog and giving me feedback, it makes the journey that much more interesting :)  I am amazed at the skills I was able to acquire via online tutorials and trial & error.   Now it’s time to get acquainted with Adobe Illustrator!  I downloaded the Illustrator CS5 30-day trial from Adobe’s website.  Can’t wait to see what sort of things I can create!

Adieu Photoshop!
