Brushing up on my Photoshopping Skills

I apologize for the lack of posts recently… I just started a second job and trying to juggle work and a baby doesn’t allow too much time for hobbies! My mom asked me to Photoshop some images of her work to which I gladly obliged (it’s been a while since I have had time to practice). Ever since I can remember, my mom has been painting and repainting everything in our house. Here’s a peek at some of her creations:

Isn’t she talented?! :)

Desk Makeover

Hello WordPress Universe!

I am really excited about this project! It all started when I found this old Ikea desk on Kijiji for $20 (& that included delivery!). The shape is great and I loved that it was real wood however, it had a couple scratches and the tone was a little “blah”.

My colour inspiration came from this lovely buffet table (which I found on… You guessed it! Pinterest):

[Turquoise+table+3.jpg]

I went to The Home Depot and spent $25 on a roller, small paintbrush, sandpaper and some CIL Semi-Gloss paint.

The rest was easy enough.. I sanded down the furniture, wiped it clean and did a couple coats. The key to this project was patience and letting the paint dry before the second coat! I didn’t wait quite long enough and ended up scraping off some of the first coat in the process… Ooops!

I am in LOVE with my new desk; Now I just need a beautiful iMac to set on top of it!

Thanks for reading :)

Home Office Inspiration

Like everyone else, I have been consumed with browsing Pinterest lately… It even brought out a side of me that is interested in interior design (which I never knew existed!). I’m still not crazy about the manual labour that goes into decorating however, I enjoy looking at pictures. Currently, my dining room table is doubling as a desk but I’m working on it!

Here’s a collection of drool-worthy workspaces:

Project #18: Make a Poster (Photoshop CS6[!])

Typographic Posters have me slightly obsessed lately so I decided to take a stab at making one myself with the Photoshop CS6 Beta.  To be honest, I can’t really tell the difference from the 5th edition although I’m a fan of the black screen and it seems to be a little more intuitive. What really inspired me to create something with Photoshop were these Herringbone patterns that I received (free!) for signing up with Creative Market:

I wish that I could paint all my walls and furniture in Herringbone and be surrounded by it all the time! Gorgeous.

This is the poster that I created:

The fonts are all recent downloads (Outlier, Ostrich Sans & Code Light) & I used a Grunge image from Creative Market to add some texture to the circle behind the word “YOU”.  All in all, I’m pretty happy with the result and it was a fun way to spend my Saturday night! Haha

New Blog Banner (Adobe Illustrator CS5)

Has anyone tried out the Adobe Creative Suite #6 yet??

Sorry for the lack of posts, I have been uber busy with work this week!  I made my first mobile app ever and it took me a while to get used to the building platform that I am using (GoMobile Solutions).  If the company decides to purchase the app I will definitely share it on here!

I have been dying to design a new banner and my free Adobe Illustrator trial expires today so it seemed like a great time to create one.  I decided to keep it simple this time… I used this picture of Yellowknife that I edited in Photoshop a while back:

And I found an awesome free font here:

awesome designer fonts created in 2011

(Downloading fonts is my latest obsession)

I combined my picture and font to make my new header:

Hopefully it won’t be too long until I have time to make another post!!

Project #15: Live Tracing & The Pen Tool (Adobe Illustrator)

With each design I complete using the Pen Tool I learn so many new things and I think I am finally beginning to feel comfortable with it.  I spent much more time on this project than I probably should have haha..

I love this drawing by Garance Dore:

& this is my version:

If only I could draw as fabulously as Garance… Mine is much more cartoon-ish.  To make my design I traced this image of myself by hand using the Pen Tool:

I adjusted certain features and then Live Traced the drawing to get the “photocopied” sort of look. I thought the pink lips were a cute addition!  To create the cursive text, I wrote “Practice Makes Perfect” on a piece of paper:

Then I used the Live Trace function to isolate my text & I changed the fill to improve the appearance.

So ready to work on something new, maybe it’s time for a new blog banner!

Project #11: Blended Photos (Photoshop CS5)

As promised, I created my own version of the following photo:

I did not use any tutorials for this project (!) so it’s definitely not perfect but I’m excited that I was (mostly) able to figure it out!

I took this image of myself:

… And combined it with this background image which I took in England:

I played around with the Opacity and used the eraser tool to blend the photos, then changed the colouring and duplicated the image to get my final result:

TA-DA :)

Project Numero 6: Picture of a Thousand Words (Photoshop CS5)

Baby Ana decided to nap today so I actually had time to do some Photoshop-ing!  This project was super fun and it’s also easier than it looks (to me anyway).

I used the following video tutorial I found on YouTube:

Took this photo of me:

(yes I only have pregnant photos of myself)

And turned it into this:

I love it!

Project #5: Make a Twitter Background (Photoshop CS5)

I recently caved and got Twitter so I decided to make a customized background with Photoshop; It was not as easy as I thought it would be!  The biggest challenge that I faced was getting the image size right… I found plenty of tutorials online however, none of them seemed to have the right proportion guidelines. I played around for about an hour and here is the size I used:

33.86w x 15.57h in centimeters

I changed my resolution to 50 lines/inch (to change go to Image -> Image Size -> Auto)

My design is pretty simple as I found the frilly ones did not look as good.

If you have Twitter, let’s be friends @ellencrawf0rd

Project #4: Create Andy Warhol Pop Art (Photoshop CS5)

I ended up using this tutorial to make my Andy Warhol Pop Art picture: http://www.ehow.com/how_5348870_make-pop-art-using-photoshop.html

This is my original photo:

And here is the finished product:

If you choose to try this, use a picture with a more simple background – it took forever to delete all the little flowers!  Also, I painted in some thin lines to close off the face and hairline so that I could use the paint bucket tool to fill the areas in.  The best part about this project was colouring in the pictures!
