Home Office Inspiration

Like everyone else, I have been consumed with browsing Pinterest lately… It even brought out a side of me that is interested in interior design (which I never knew existed!). I’m still not crazy about the manual labour that goes into decorating however, I enjoy looking at pictures. Currently, my dining room table is doubling as a desk but I’m working on it!

Here’s a collection of drool-worthy workspaces:

Project #15: Live Tracing & The Pen Tool (Adobe Illustrator)

With each design I complete using the Pen Tool I learn so many new things and I think I am finally beginning to feel comfortable with it.  I spent much more time on this project than I probably should have haha..

I love this drawing by Garance Dore:

& this is my version:

If only I could draw as fabulously as Garance… Mine is much more cartoon-ish.  To make my design I traced this image of myself by hand using the Pen Tool:

I adjusted certain features and then Live Traced the drawing to get the “photocopied” sort of look. I thought the pink lips were a cute addition!  To create the cursive text, I wrote “Practice Makes Perfect” on a piece of paper:

Then I used the Live Trace function to isolate my text & I changed the fill to improve the appearance.

So ready to work on something new, maybe it’s time for a new blog banner!

Project #14: Typography (Illustrator CS5)

Hello WordPress friends, it’s been a while! I had a job interview on Friday to work for a company building mobile applications and.. I got the job!! I am so stoked to get started!

For this project I decided to make a poster displaying a quote using different fonts. I sketched the text on some paper & took a picture:

(Yes, I really need to practice my printing skills haha.)

I used the “Live Trace” feature in Adobe Illustrator (thanks to Suzannah for telling me about this function!) to isolate each word and “Stroked” the paths with different brushes. I ended up replacing some text with Illustrator because I did not like the way the words “makes” and “you” turned out.

This is what I came up with:

It’s not the most amazing work I have ever done but I was on a limited time frame and I really wanted to make a blog post haha. The next one will be better I promise :)

Practice: Double Exposure & Much More (Photoshop CS5)

I was so inspired by the following images by Karen To (which I encountered thanks to THE FLOOD Zine’s WordPress site) & Dan Mountford (found on the WordPress blog STYND).  You can click on the images to go to the original posts and see more photos!

Here are my interpretations:

I altered the Opacity, Curve levels, Contrast/Brightness and Hues of my design.

These are my original photos:

& my second design (which was a tad more complex):

In this image I combined the following images using different Opacity settings:

In addition to layering all these photos, I changed the Hues, Curves, Brightness & Contrast levels of my final picture.  I used Paint Brushes and also applied some Colour Exclusion and Double Exposure techniques to achieve my final effect.

With lots of practice I hope that I can attain the same level of quality as my inspirations: Karen To & Dan Mountford!

Project #9: Art Inspired by Mother Mother Album Cover (Photoshop CS5)

Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day!  I got the new Mother Mother record yesterday and was so inspired by the cover:

Here’s my version:

I used this image of myself:

Then applied the “Threshold” feature to my photo along with some filters.  I created a ton of background layers in different colours, gradients & shapes.  Over top of my background I used different brushes, blurs and stamps to achieve a look similar to that of my inspiration.  I also used the pen tool to create a couple lines and applied filters to the final background image.

Favourite project yet.
